How do you choose a helmet for a minibike, pit bike or quad bike?

Whether you’ve just bought a minibike or regularly ride a pit bike or a kids’ ATV, a high-quality helmet should be a staple of your gear. Why is a high-quality helmet so important?

When riding off-road, the risk of falling is much higher than when riding on the road. Uneven terrain, rocks, tree roots, or jumps can cause you to lose control of your motorcycle in a matter of seconds.

A high-quality motocross helmet protects your skull, brain, jaw, chin, and face in the event of a fall, as well as your head from flying rocks or branches. A helmet is therefore the most important piece of your entire gear, and it’s crucial not to take choosing one lightly.

How do you choose the right helmet size?

Measure the circumference of your head

Using a tape measure, measure the circumference of your head approximately 1.5–2 centimeters above your eyebrows, roughly at the level of your temples. Compare the measurement you took with the manufacturer’s size chart.

A properly fitting helmet:

  • fits snugly,
  • does not shift when you move your head,
  • does not press on the temples,
  • does not create painful pressure points.

A new helmet tends to be a little tighter at first. The inner padding will mold slightly to your head after a few rides. So definitely don’t buy a looser helmet—your safety is far more important than comfort.

What other protective gear and accessories does a child need?

Don't forget motocross goggles

Motocross helmets are designed to be used with motocross goggles.

They protect your eyes from dust, mud, insects, small stones, and branches. They help you see better while riding and undoubtedly make riding safer.

Protective gear and gloves are other must-have pieces of equipment

Many beginners invest only in a helmet. While a helmet is, in principle, the most important piece of gear, in everyday riding, it’s usually the knees, elbows, or spine that are most commonly injured in a fall. That’s why we recommend purchasing additional protective gear as well.

For example, high-quality protective gear significantly reduces the risk of fractures and abrasions.
It’s therefore worth getting knee pads, elbow pads, a spine protector, and a protective vest.

Gloves , on the other hand, improve your grip on the handlebars, protect your fingers and palms, and enhance riding comfort.
At minibike-shop.cz, you’ll find models for both children and adults from brands such as Heipe, Madmotor, and Pilot.

FAQ

How often should you replace your helmet?

We recommend replacing a helmet after any major fall. Even if there is no visible damage, the inner lining may be compromised. It is necessary to replace children’s helmets as they grow—even though the helmet should not be loose, a size that is too small—one the child has long since outgrown—is not appropriate.

Can the helmet be one size larger?

No. The helmet must fit snugly. A helmet that’s too loose won’t provide maximum protection in the event of a fall. We definitely do not recommend buying a single helmet for multiple siblings or buying a larger one with the idea that the child will grow into it.

Are children's helmets just as safe?

Yes. They must meet the same safety requirements as adult models. The main difference is in size and weight.
