How do you choose a children's motorbike by height and age?

Choosing the right size is one of the most important considerations when selecting a children's motorbike. A bike that is too big and heavy can make a beginner's first rides unnecessarily difficult, while a child will quickly outgrow a bike that is too small and will not have enough room on it.

That is why we have grouped our children's motorbikes by rider height and  age as a general guide. This makes it easier to find models that are the right size for a particular child. You can currently choose from four groups: 90–130 cm / 4–7 years, 110–140 cm / 5–9 years, 120–160 cm / 7–13 years and from 160 cm / from 12 years.

Height matters more than age alone

Always treat the age information as a rough guide. Two children of the same age may differ in height, build, strength and previous riding experience.

When choosing, we therefore recommend paying particular attention to the rider's height and the seat height of the specific motorbike. The child should be able to handle the motorbike comfortably, reach the handlebars and controls, and maintain adequate control of the bike.

Children's motorbikes for beginners and more experienced riders

Height is not the only factor, though. It also matters whether the child is getting on a motorbike for the very first time or already has experience on a minibike, mini motocross bike or smaller pit bike, for example.

For a beginner, a lighter, easier-to-handle bike with an appropriate power output is usually more suitable. For a more experienced rider, you can consider a larger motorbike, bigger wheels and more power.

At Minibike-shop.com, you will find both petrol and electric children's motorbikes, so as well as size, you can consider the power source, power output, how the bike is operated and the environment in which the child will ride most often.

How can you tell if a children's motorbike is the right size?

The most important thing is for the rider to feel comfortable on the motorbike and be able to control it safely. Pay particular attention to the seat height, wheel size, overall dimensions and weight of the bike.

It is therefore not ideal to buy a much larger motorbike simply for the child to grow into. Especially on their first rides, it is important for young riders to feel confident controlling the bike so they can focus on handling it correctly and gaining experience.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose the right motorbike size for a child?

Start with the child's height and compare it with the recommended rider height and seat height of the specific motorbike. Then take into account the child's experience, the bike's weight, power output and wheel size.

Should I choose a children's motorbike by age or height?

Primarily by height and build. Age is useful as a general guide, but it should not be the only factor.

Does a child need to be able to place both feet flat on the ground when sitting on a motorbike?

There is no single universal rule for all types of motorbike and rider experience levels. For a complete beginner, however, it is an advantage to have adequate support when stopping and to feel confident on the bike.

Is it better to buy a child a larger motorbike so they do not outgrow it too quickly?

A bike that is too large can be harder to handle and heavier. It is better to look for a size that the child can control safely now, with a reasonable amount of room to grow.

What if a child is on the boundary between two size categories?

In this case, we recommend comparing specific models by seat height, wheel size and weight. Experience also plays a major role – a more experienced rider will usually handle a larger bike better than a complete beginner.

Petrol or electric motorbike for a child?

Both options have their advantages. An electric motorbike offers quiet running and simple controls, while a petrol model delivers the traditional character of a combustion-engine motorbike. In both cases, however, the most important thing is to choose the right size and power output for the rider.
