Electric boat motors for dinghies and small craft

An electric boat motor is a practical alternative to a combustion engine for fishing, leisure boating and quiet travel on the water. It offers quiet running, simple controls and produces no exhaust gases directly on the boat during use.

Why choose an electric boat motor?

One of the main advantages of an electric motor is its quiet, smooth running. You will appreciate this when leisure boating, but especially when fishing, when you want to avoid disturbing your surroundings with a noisy combustion engine.

An electric motor also requires neither petrol nor the routine maintenance associated with a combustion engine. However, you do need to allow for a suitable battery, charging it and regularly checking the electrical system and the motor itself.

How to choose an electric boat motor

Electric boat motors are often rated by their thrust in pounds (lbs). A higher value means greater motor thrust, but it is not a direct measure of power in watts or the vessel's maximum speed.

Three HEIPE variants are currently available:

When choosing, consider above all the vessel's size and weight, its load, conditions on the water and your intended use. A stronger motor does not automatically mean a significantly higher speed.

What does boat motor thrust in lbs mean?

The designation lbs expresses motor thrust in pounds. Thrust is particularly important for the motor's ability to move a vessel under a given load or overcome water resistance. However, the resulting speed is also affected by the boat's design, its weight, load, wind, current and other conditions. You should therefore not choose an electric boat motor solely on the assumption that “more lbs = a proportionally higher speed”.

Which battery should you use with an electric boat motor?

An electric boat motor needs a suitable deep-cycle battery. When choosing one, you must meet the motor's voltage requirements and select a suitable capacity for the desired running time. The greater the motor's current draw and the longer you want to travel, the greater the demands on the battery. Actual running time is also affected by the selected speed setting, the boat's load, conditions on the water and the battery's condition. Always choose a battery according to the technical requirements of the specific motor.

Electric boat motors for anglers

An electric boat motor makes particular sense for fishing. Low noise levels allow you to move comfortably across the water without the characteristic sound of a combustion engine, while simple speed control helps you manoeuvre the vessel. An electric boat motor is therefore suitable for fishing boats, flat-bottomed boats and other compatible small craft, for example.

Replacement propellers and accessories

Over time, spare parts may also come in handy for your boat motor. This category currently includes replacement propellers for HEIPE NRS40, NRS62 and NRS86 motors, as well as a replacement speed selector switch. When choosing a spare part, always check which specific motor model it is intended for.
