Fitting an auxiliary engine to a bicycle is governed by Czech Ministry of Transport DECREE 341/2014 Sb. on the approval of roadworthiness and the technical conditions for the operation of vehicles on roads. We strongly recommend studying this decree and taking into account all the conditions it sets out. If you have decided to use an auxiliary engine on your bicycle, you must comply with all traffic rules and take care to protect your own safety, health and property, as well as those of others. By purchasing an auxiliary engine, you accept full responsibility for any consequences associated with its use.
A motorised bicycle, or a "bicycle with an auxiliary engine", must retain the characteristics of a bicycle: the engine must be removable, and the bicycle must also be usable as a normal bicycle. The speed of this bicycle must not exceed 25 km/h, engine power is limited to 1 kW (only 250 W for electric bicycles), and the displacement of the combustion engine must not exceed 50 cc. If these conditions are met, the rider does not need a driving licence.
The key points of the decree relating to add-on drive systems fitted with combustion engines.
A bicycle may be retrofitted with an auxiliary engine provided that:
a) the original character of the bicycle is retained (in accordance with Articles 1, 2),
b) the auxiliary engine meets the requirements of Section 19 of the Act as applicable,
c) its power does not exceed 1 kW,
d) where a combustion engine is used, its cylinder displacement (or combined cylinder displacement) does not exceed 50 cm3,
e) the maximum design speed does not exceed 25 km.h-1,
f) fitting the drive system (engine, fuel tank or battery) to the bicycle does not require alterations to its load-bearing parts.
If the vehicle meets all the above requirements, it continues to be regarded as a bicycle for the purposes of this decree.
